Introduction

In 2010 our president Dr. Lori Gaskin empowered a multi-disciplinary team of students, faculty and staff to create a Sustainable Strategic Plan for West Valley College. Now the WVC Sustainability Committee is putting that plan into action. Simultaneously, all over the campus sustainability is happening. Buildings are being renovated to be energy efficient and meet LEED requirements. Green standards are being written, and operations and maintenance procedures are being developed that rise to the challenge of the sustainability vision and mission. The tide has turned and sustainability has the stage.

The WVC Interior Design program is a career program with a long history and a stellar reputation, preparing students to become professional interior designers. Responding to the sobering fact that the built environment is responsible for generating approximately 60% of the green-house gases which threaten our atmosphere, the ID program is committed to providing students with relevant education focused on sustainable design. The Sustainable Design Certificate program is just one example.

What happens when an inspired vision connects with a stellar career program and passionate students? The WVC LEED Internship happens. Professionals in the fields of interior design and architecture are called to be leaders in an emerging green economy. The WVC LEED Internship is a response to the call. Created by passionate faculty, students and staff, the mission of the internship is to provide design students with an invaluable sustainable design hands-on experience, on the WVC campus, the very environment that is so dedicated to their education.
